Jim McDonnell, trainer of IBF world super middleweight champion James DeGale believes that tonight’s meeting between Andre Ward and Paul Smith will not be as straightforward for the American as most believe. Speaking to BoxingScene the former world title challenger explained why Smith has a shot at victory.
“I told James DeGale this and I’ll tell you now. I had seven years out of the boxing ring and made a comeback. I don’t care how hard you train, how hard you prepare. When you haven’t been in that ring with those little gloves on your hands…Paul Smith has boxed for two world titles since Ward had his last fight, basically. Ward is going into the ring with someone who is oiled, who is ready and mentally focused. The only thing is the weight, and Paul Smith is not a massive super middleweight. He could still do middleweight.”
