Comments Thread For: Smith: Ward is Happy To Drag You Into Boring Fight

Liverpool’s Paul Smith, 35-5 (20), will have to produce the fight of his life this weekend when he meets the comebacking Andre Ward, 27-0 (14), in Oakland, California.

The 32-year-old Liverpudlian knows that he has a huge task on his hands, but he believes that Ward’s long break from boxing has shortened the odds. However, he knows that he may only get a single chance at glory due to the American’s style of boxing.

This won't get a chance to become a boring fight as it will be over in a couple of rounds. As a brit I want smith to win but ward is at least 3 levels above smith.

yes Paul Smith and that's the character of a champion in sports. You win by whatever means necessary. In basketball they use the hack a shaq which is boring but wins games. Some teams win championships by strict fundamentals that are boring but wins games that the 2k generation wont understand. The patriots will burn you with 5 yard completions for an entire game and win. A soccer team will control the ball on their side all game and win 1 to 0. Don't bring up the entertainment factor because all those sports are forms of entertainment on prime time tv. Winning is all about control. You guys don't like the slick boxers but there is something to be appreciated in a fighter that can control an opponent for 12 rounds in a small space, take away their weapons and fight on their terms.

Andre Ward showed what a prima donna diva he is by demanding the catch-weight against a guy who has been fighting at super-middleweight.

It wasn't enough that Smith lost his past two fights, and was easily KOed by Groves. It wasn't enough that the fight is in Andre Ward's home country and home town, and no doubt he'll have either his personal referee Jack Reiss or another California Boxing Commission referee to permit him to foul.

If Ward wanted to test how he'd feel at a higher weight, he should have warmed up against a real light heavyweight at 175, someone not too dangerous (on Smith's level). Demanding a super middleweight go up four pounds to fight him is pathetic.
