Andre Ward is not going to sell out the 20,000-seat Oracle Arena; will still end up doing significantly more at the live gate than most folks here are willing to acknowledge (have marked $1m as my expectation for this fight, and I'm still standing by that).

Andre Ward has never argued that he is a PPV star; he's simply stated that him being in PPV fights isn't as ridiculous as you seem to want to push, especially with his track record (years off withstanding).

Beyond that, Golovkin wasn't able to "sell out" a 12,000-seat arena until days to the fight (and I have no doubt that K2 comped tickets for that event, too). lol

$1mill? He did $277k for Rodriguez.

There's nothing in the Twitter post that you're trumpeting that says anything about tickets doing poorly; for all the people who don't want to waste the time looking at the dumb post, the tweet links to an image of a pull tab that shows an offered ticket discount for Ward's church, a ticket discount offered by Shoe Palace, and a third discount that I don't even want to go back to look for.

(All of which are access code protected and also limited to only certain sections of tickets, which Steve Kim failed to even acknowledge)

Then again, that doesn't mesh with the story that you're seeking to present, so whatever floats your boat.

This may take a bit of effort, but there's a far better way to actually gauge how ticket sales are doing, and Ticketmaster will help you with this way too; go to the event site, set the search to 'Best Available', and then look, price point to price point, where you could be able to purchase 4 seats to the fight;

$250: Section B, Row 11 [second to last row of the ringside seats]
$125: Section 102, Row 10
$90: Section 111, Row 15
$60: Section 104, Row 15
$30: Section 111, Row 20

$125-$30 tickets all in the lower bowl

Ward put 10,000 people into Oracle Arena (and sold near 8,000 tickets for a gate over $700k) for his first fight on HBO [after 5 fights on Showtime Championship Boxing (well before the Mayweather jump), and another six on ShoBox], just by being himself.

In Ontario, CA for a fighter from the Bay Area, against a Dominican fighter based out of the Northeast, with apparently no real LA-area promotional effort to speak of.

Ward is again fighting in the Bay Area, still has tons of support in the Bay Area, Roc Nation is actually marketing the fight on the ground, and the whole region is still in a flutter over the Warriors winning the NBA championship.

The Dawson fight was definitely a while ago, but Ward brought in over $700k for that fight. Why not $1m?

So what you're saying is that Golovkin draws similar crowds in Southern California to what Andre Ward draws in his hometown?

And you can try to make it seem like Ward was some unknown, relegated to SHO...but he'd fought on HBO before then...he was an American Olympic gold medalist. It's not like nobody knew him. And he's fought numerous times throughout his career in the Bay Area in both Oakland and San Jose.

ward was never a big draw. the dawson fight was his high point at 7000. froch, abraham, rodriguez did 4000-5000. this fight against smith they are giving away tickets. people came to see him and instead of his numbers going up like ggg they went down which means they didn't like what they paid for.
