My view on round 3 on Wilder-Molina + Wilder's chin

I just re-watched round 3 of that fight after seeing it on TV last night. On TV I thought Wilder was really, really hurt in round 3 after he got caught by the big left hook. But looking at it now you can see Wilders knees buckled but he was on solid legs after that.

On 2:04 of round 3 he got hit by a big right hand from Molina but he took it and stood up, his legs were OK. So IMO Wilder doesn't have a terrible chin, but his tendency to pull straight back from punches is dangerous. He needs to work on his defence.

Wilder is a work in progress IMO, he used the left hook a lot for the first time tonight. I don't agree with people saying Povetkin will blow him away, however I do think Wilder needs 2-3 fights against tough opposition before he meets Povetkin.

PS: This is my views about Wilder's chin and his defence. I agree his offense was average, but that was rarely questioned about him before.

He might not have a terrible chin. But at heavyweight, I can often only take one solid shot on the chin to put someone to sleep. If Wilder leaves his chin in the air and pulls straight back, regardless of his chin, we will eventually be put to sleep.

very few fighters have chins that are so bad that they alone cost them fights - what's killer is the combination of a bad chin and leaky defence. wilder seems to tick both of those boxes, so i don't fancy his chances against a world class offensive beast like povetkin

He might not have a terrible chin but Povetking breaks iron chins. Wilder is a goner.

He got caught by a big, strong guy and was a bit jarred. Perfectly normal. His chin is alright.

Good post. He could use a lot of tweaks but the pulling straight back needs to stop. He's going to get caught by a top 10 fighter and he will be on his back.

But a 6'4, 240 lbs man has power to jar anyone. He didn't go down or double over - just buzzed as one expects.

I still think he has a weak chin. His legs look like arms, I can't get over that.

But I think you made a good post.

I can assure everyone here that no version of Wilder ever beats Povetkin.

Wilder's defence is non-existent and his chin is suspect at best. To make matters worse, he doesn't possess world class knockout power despite what his record says.
