Title holders should have one year from the day they win the title to defend against either their mandatory if one has been designated, or the number one contender. As soon as a mandatory contender has been designated, the champion should then have a year from that date to fight him. The only reason for bypassing a mandatory defense should be injury or sickness or personal reasons such as sickness or death in the family, either of the mandatory challenger or the champion. If a champion refuses a mandatory, he should be stripped of his title. No catchweights should be permitted in title fights.

These should be common rules across all sanctioning bodies, including RING Magazine.

The lineal championship really does not exist in the real world. It is a theoretical title with no organization overseeing it in any way. Some claim it is basically the RING title but others claim it is not. In the LHW division, the WBC title that Stevenson holds is considered to be the lineal title by most boxing experts. But if he was to be stripped or to vacate that title, many boxing fans would claim that he remains as the lineal champ until someone beats him for it.

Basically the 'lineal' title is worthless and meaningless.

If that is the case, then Cotto will likely fight Golovkin at MW no problem.

Personally, I would call that a disgraceful catchweight specifically designed to disadvantage Golovkin, but hey.... if Hypekin fans call 155 middleweight when referring to Canelo, then those same a55hats can refer to 155 as MW when discussing Cotto/Golovkin.

If Loeffler thinks that the WBC will not sanction Cotto/Alvarez for the WBC belt, he must also believe in the tooth fairy. If he thinks Cotto is going to pay Golovkin a step-aside fee so that he can fight Alvarez for three or four times the amount of money he would make fighting Golovkin, then Loeffler also believes in Santa Claus.

Golovkin has no power in this matter and cannot force Cotto to do a damn thing. The only thing he can hope for is that Cotto will agree to fight him after Cotto KO's Alvarez.
