  • Comments Thread For: Malignaggi Approved By EBU as Challenger For Branco

Former two-division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6) has been approved as challenger for EBU welterweight champ, 44-year old Gianluca Branco (49-3-1), under the condition that the fight is announced by the end of June and is executed before October. This was decided by the EBU council during the General Assembly this past weekend in Paris.

If Paulie wins he'll be Brook's next opponent.

Garcia vs Malignaggi was never in play for August, despite what the rumors being swirled here.

Garcia is fighting Viktor Postol in August (not an overly tough fight, Garcia headlines another fight on TV/in New York, and going through with the fight keeps Garcia in good graces with the WBC and WBA, for the eventual move up to 147).

Malignaggi fights Branca in Fall 2015, wins, and then he's left with a nice couple viable fights for end 2015/early 2016

Garcia vs Malignaggi at Barclays (Garcia's debut at 147, against a name fighter at welterweight, in an event that would do really good business), Malignaggi vs Danny O'Connor at Barclays Center (NY vs Boston matchup for the Northeast, and another solid fight for Paulie to look at), and Pacquiao vs Malignaggi in the United States (Paulie's not going to Macau to deal with that setup, fight would put a good payday in Paulie's pocket, and Paulie would have a good look at actually winning that fight, setting up another big payday after that).

Paulie vs Danny to close out the year (maybe as the final primetime NBC show for the year), would be the most likely fight.

In honor of the GOAT, he should fight for the Ali Raymi Memorial UBO interim belt
