Martinez didn't have to agree to 159.

Lara and Kirkland didn't have to agree to 155.

    etc etc.
If Geale doesn't agree to 157 then Cotto won't give him a title shot and a title shot is what all top fighters strive for. Canelo vs Kirkland is non title so it effects or hurts nobody, Martinez didn't have to agree to 159 but if he doesn't agree he remains champion so it's his choice. Geale on the other hand has no choice but to agree to the 157 that Cotto demands if he is to have any chance to win Cotto's world's middleweight title. Also how do the fans know who is really the best middleweight in the world unless middleweight title fights are fought at the true 160 pound middleweight limit? Maybe Cotto can beat Geale at a top weight of 157 but not at a top weight of 160. If a champion needs a build in catchweight edge then he shouldn't be the champion in my opinion.

Yeah but what's the common denominator? All the guys agreeing are the B-side who need the payday. You could say the have the choice to walk away but when the dollars are on the table and you may never see those types of dollars again then you kinda have to agree.
