Did Bert Cooper have the potential to be one of boxing's greats?

I'm watching his fight against holyfield and he him in serious trouble in that fight. He had him in a lot more trouble then Tyson ever had him in.

Don't know much about him other then that fight. Watched the intro of the cooper/holyfield fight and it was stated cooper was just a nobody, yet he ended up giving holyfield a decent run for his money.

Going to watch more of his fights.

Did he have the potential to become one of the greats?

Idk about one of the greats, but if he hadn't had all the outside the ring issues he had idk how he couldn't have achieved more. But the best possible Cooper in ever fight doesn't get him to all time great status.

Probably not a great but he could have been better, his stamina was pretty poor. He had a drug and alcohol problem during his career, if he was more dedicated surely would have been better.

But he had some awesome fights as it was! Obviously Evander fight was awesome, the Michael Moore fight was an absolute classic.

Early on in his career he had a few upsets at cruiserweight and heavyweight. Without the crazyness in his life maybe he could have won a splintered title at some point, but he was very limited, watch his beating at the hands of Carl Williams and you will see that his lack of size coupled with poor defense made him a sitting duck against taller longer opponents.

That was a great night for "Smokin'" Bert Cooper. Iirc, Holyfield wanted a showcase for his home town fans and Bert was having none of it.

              Great fight.

                  Joe Calzaghe: "Henry Cooper?"
