The problem I have with catchweights is that it's a convenient excuse for the loser to use as a reason he lost.

But there's no stopping them. If both parties agree and the sanctioning body does too, nothing we can do about it.

The announcement of Miguel Cotto next facing Daniel Geale didn’t exactly overwhelm the boxing public, other than the fact that the June 6 clash will mark Cotto’s return to New York. Even more unsettling was the accompanying news that the middleweight championship bout will take place at a maximum catchweight of 157 lbs., three pounds below the division limit. Cotto demanded—and was granted—a catchweight in place for last year’s challenge of the middleweight crown for his eventual 10th round stoppage of long-reigning lineal king Sergio Martinez. The maximum limit was 159 lbs., inconsequential in the grand scheme of things since Martinez—a career welterweight and junior middleweight before moving up for good in 2009—has only weighed heavier than that twice in his entire career, both times less than a pound above that mark.

Well damn never say never huh?
I dont take Cotto too seriously at middleweight, and Cotto is obviously not a genuine middleweight..... but Geale is 100% correct imo.

Catchweights suck, look at the current situation with Broner/Porter.

Cotto could have weighed in at 157, no problem.

            Of for F*** sake.

He didn't have to take the fight. Or he could have held still at 160.
Once you agree you agree. End of it.

Good post. I dislike catch weights cause they take something out of the win. The stans don't complain as long as their boxer wins but it's still a bitch move no matter what.

I bet you'd bid high dollars for a jar of Cotto's ball sweat.

What's funny about this is at first there was no problem with the weight. Now it seems after they saw Cotto on beast mode after his media day, in which he was sick and could barely breathe, they seem to be a little nervous about the catch weight now. Think they finally realized that they are in for a hell of a fight with a smaller man.

On another note I have never been a fan of catch weights but I still give credit if it's reasonable. Till this day I still maintain Cotto was Pac's greatest win whether he drained or not. That being said if Cotto wins here he will get credit from me.

What hating? He said he didn't believe in the, and found the situation funny. If cotto had balls the fight would be at 160 case closed.

Not the case at all. In proper NSB fashion they've decided to make up a title to troll the masses. Both Geale and Shaw had no problem accepting the catch weight. They simply expressed their stance on the issue. Neither believe a cw is necessary in a title bout.
