Comments Thread For: Porter's Trainer Brushes Off Weight Concerns For Broner

Kenny Porter, father and trainer of "Showtime" Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16KOs), says the upcoming fight with Adrien Broner (30-1, 22KOs), on June 20th at the MGM Grand in Vegas - will not be affected by the agreed upon catch-weight of 144-pounds plus one. The stockier Porter wanted to back Broner against the wall. They knew if Broner's catch-weight demand was accepted, the fight would take place. Premier Boxing Champions will set the fight down as a headliner for their next offering on NBC.

I feel kind of sad for the Porters. Here we have a good father who supported his child and stayed with him from the beginning brought him up the right way and became a champion (albeit against one of the biggest scrubs Malinaggi). But he needs a better trainer, Porter does. He has to throw more straight punches down the pike. Not that caveman crap he used against Brook. But we live in a society where bad is esteemed and immorality is looked upon as a good thing. Broner on the other hand exemplifies what is wrong in society but he sells so he will get the nod. I long for the day where good is esteemed and bad not so much. Probably not as Mayweather will cash in more millions on us common folk as he deals with white europeans about fashion sipping a whine with Bieber and dating Chloe Kardashin

Nah. He struggles to make 147, he's gonna be dry as a bone when he weighs in, he might even faint.

"My fighter struggles to make 147, he has no shot at this catchweight" - Said no trainer ever.

But whatever, they agreed to the weight so it's on them to make sure he is competitive within those constraints. But I'm not optimistic Porter will pull it off.

When do fighters or trainers not shrug off such concerns before a fight where they are going to be paid. It is kind of their responsibility to make the match-up look attractive if they are taking the money.

It is not until after the fight that you here the excuses (or reasons) why a guy looked broke on fight night.

Thing is AB has fought at welter already. I'm sure if it were against a guy like jesse vargas or something, he wouldn't have asked for a catchweight.
