Comments Thread For: CompuBox: DeGale's Power The Difference With Dirrell

James DeGale MBE created British boxing history last night when he claimed the vacant IBF World Super Middleweight title in Boston against Andre Dirrell – and told his rivals at 168lbs: “I will fight anyone”.

DeGale became the first British Olympic Gold medal winner to land a World title with a superb performance at the Agganis Arena, in a fight that started in explosive fashion for the Londoner.

‘Chunky’ began well in the opening round but then appeared to be hampered by a cut on the right eyebrow early in the second session. Dabbing away at the blood, DeGale touched Dirrell to the body and then unleashed a thunderous left that sent the American to the canvas. Dirrell bounced straight back up but was on unsteady legs and another flurry of punches saw him crumbled to the deck again – and the Michigan man was fortunate that it was late in the round so he could get back to his corner and regroup. If you didn't see the fight and are just going by compubox, it looks like it was an all around close fight, with the winner being accurately determined. Dirrell outlanded DeGale in 6 rounds with round 2 being negated by 2 KD's, DeGale outlanded Dirrell in 4 rounds, in 2 rounds they landed the same. And then DeGale has the two knock downs to make the fight 115-113 DeGale.

Now watching the fight and seeing who was more effective with their punches landed is a different story.

And anyone who did watch the fight would have seen a close fight with neither fighter going the extra mile or putting in the extra effort required to get the clear win. Without the two KDs, it could easily have been declared a draw.

Exactly this. The 2 KD's were the deciding factor. Degale was losing the 2nd round pretty handily. Honestly, assuming the following rounds played out the same, without the KD's, Dirrell would have come away with a close decision. Neither guy impressed.
