Palenque, Metepec, México - Super bantamweight prospect Rey Vargas was unable to score a knockout victory over brave Filipino contender Edward Mansito as they went the full ten round distance. With the victory Vargas retains the International Super Bantamweight title of the World Boxing Council.

Vargas (24-0, 20 KOs), 24, unloaded on Mansito (13-2-2, 7 KOs) in every round. He hurt Mansito several times, scored a knockdown and the Filipino continued to stay in the fight with a mountain of courage. After ten rounds, the scores were all the same - 100-88, 100-88 and 100-88.

Rey Vargas is a great boxer.

Maybe he is the only one that can be a serious rival for Rigondeaux.

I was hoping he'd get him out of there. Good win none the less.

Santa Cruz gives him the bizness.

I've always been impressed with this kid. I've been following him since a little before he turned pro. He's fast, good reflexes, good power, decent footwork.
He needs to improve on not trying to please the crowd too much sometimes, or he'll get caught by a better puncher and boxer. He's already been down like twice (at least once). He lets his guard down when he gets excited trying to finish his opponents.
He also needs to step up in competition already, fighting these types of opponents won't help him improve.
If Santa Cruz vacates, hopefully he can get a shot at the vacant belt against Hugo Ruiz.

Vargas has a very good footwork, man. In amateur he schooled Tomoki Kameda, former WB0 bantamweight champion.

Rey Vargas is the best mexican prospect, he is better than Oscar Valdez.

The reason I said decent was because he hasn't faced a top opponent yet, so it hasn't been tested to the fullest. We don't know if he has smart footwork, he's fast on his feet but if he doesn't know how to use them properly, we have to categorize it as decent for now. Look at Pacquiao fast feet but can't use them properly for ****. Doesn't know how to cut off the ring, is not that good at creating angles. That's why he struggled against Floyd; Floyd has smart footwork and fast as well.

I like Vargas style really good fighter, I always thought he had more potential than JMM, that's my opinion though. It's crazy cuz I've been following this kid for years and now people are starting to jump on the bandwagon, but he still has a lot to prove.

I still don't know about that, his style looks better to the eye than Valdez. But I think i'll favor Valdez tbh. Valdez did beat him in the amateurs. They'll meet in the future for sure.

Well, I agree with you. Im mexican and I've been following this young fighter since his debut.

¿In what tournament Oscar beat him? I thought Oscar has a better atack but Vargas has better footwork, jab and defense.

              Greetings.

Valdez beat him 13:7 at the 2007 Mexican National Championships. I think Valdez beats him again, Vargas tends to let his guard down and his opponents catch him often: he tries to please the crowd a little too much. He has a lot of work to do, like most prospects. But he needs to step up in competition, he won't learn if he keeps fighting this level of opponents.
Both good up and comers for Mexico though.

Thanks for the info. I Know Valdez defeated Carlos Cuadras, now, a world champion but i didn't know this.

Well, Valdez has the style to beat Rey Vargas because he use like a master the overhands and hooks, but, now he's a 126-130 pounds, and Vargas is a 122 pounds.
