Comments Thread For: Hatton: Golovkin May Have To Go To 168 For Ward

Manchester legend Ricky Hatton views WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 32KOs) and WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14KOs) as two of the most talented fighters in the sport not named Mayweather or Pacquiao.

Hatton does not see any fighter at 160-pounds being capable of defeating Golovkin, and says Triple G might be forced to move up in weight for a showdown with Ward.

Golovkin is looking at a return date in September. Ward is finally coming back to the ring on June 20th against Paul Smith.

Hatton probably missed the news on Froch considering a Golovkin fight...

Ward would be a mistake for the GGG team. Not that they couldn't beat him...
But he has no mass appeal; he's a boring defensive fighter in the mold of Pacquiao; and besides, he fights dirty hitting with his elbows as much as with his fists. The fight would have no mass appeal.

Now the Froch fight with GGG--that would be massive.

Yep and Monroe has a mass following. Team GGG knows Ward *****s on him...skills pay the bills.

GGG fans try to make up excuses about money etc but we all know why you don't want him to fight Ward, just admit it.

I'd like to see this fight at some point. At the moment, I see it as a close-ish matchup, but I'd have to give it some more thought.

The main thing that has me sceptical about the odds this fight is happening is that Ward is fighting @ 172 in his first fight back. But if he plans to take this fight at 166-168 then it'll happen eventually. Hopefully 2016 if Cotto/Canelo winner doesn't ask GGG to drop too far below 160.

It's hilarious how everyone has to "move up."

Ward has to move up to fight Kovalev.

Honestly, GGG is not a good 168er. He's too damn little for that weight class.

Cotto is too little to be a real MW.

Weight classes, people. We need to get back to weight classes. They exist for a reason.
