I think it was about personal pride. Kovalev might be better of being aligned with Haymon's stable at LHW but Duva didnt want to kiss the ring. Duva has been one of Haymon's most outspoken critics and using the HBO excuse as a cop out.

Kovalev just signed a new deal?
So we could have got the fight if he just waited a while?
This would have been great on ESPN, or NBC where Duva used to have fights shown.

to bad kovalov dont have the wbc belt cause he would not vacate his titles. he keeps saying all sudden he dont care about getting stevensons titles tho lame how it turned out they didnt really want to fight stevenson it was just to sell kovalov oh well

It's hilarious people think Kovalev is ducking because now 18 months later he's a bigger star and feels he should earn more. Stevenson's fault for not accepting the fight the first time around. Let the fact that Bernard couldn't even secure a fight with Stevenson marinate for a second, Bernard with no network ties...yet he booked a fight with Kovalev in 2 hours flat.

lol. that's the story you're going with now? Stevenson has the lineal title, the biggest gate is going to come in Montreal, the vast majority of the money will be coming in from Canadian PPV, yet Kovalev thinks 50/50 is a bad deal?

Hopkins couldn't secure the Stevenson fight, because he wanted a 75/25 split of the money; Hopkins-Kovalev happen so quick because Kovalev was more than happy to accept the short-end of a 75/25 split (would've probably accepted 85/15 too, if that were the price)

Stevenson isn't getting any younger. If he still wants to win this fight he needs to go over to HBO and fight Kovalev this year.

Or.. he can stay where he's at, fight the Rodriguez/Baker winner, fight Fonfara again, and then fight Pascal, making more money and being in more meaningful fights that Kovalev has to look forward to (with Oothuizen, Bute and the young bucks [Beterbiev/Alvarez/Williams] all available to fight)

Kovalev fight Mohammedi .... and then what? An in-house fight with Chilemba, and then the well runs dry (especially if Ward sticks at 168, waiting for Golovkin).
