I was actually hoping to see higher numbers given the momentum of the Klitschko & Alvarez cards. This card still did under the Curtis Stevens fight. That said, this card pretty much falls into the HBO boxing rating's baseline of 1.1-1.3 mill. In terms of marketing, HBO should've had this fight on one of Time Warner's basic cable outlets like truTV, TNT, or TBS.

That tells me Golovkin's popularity isn't really growing that much but is holding steady. He needs to fight a big name star to pull in more casuals. I don't know if Ward or Lara would push Golovkin's ratings over 1.5mill, but I would hope so.

Mayweather never really started crossing over in status until he got the Gatti fight (thanks to Gatti's trilogy with Ward).

I don't know, Lara would represent the most well-known US opponent that Golovkin has yet to face. His performance against Alvarez is as much a hindrance as it is a selling point. Outside of Alvarez and Cotto, I don't think there's anyone from 154-160 who's had as many tv appearances as Lara.

Honestly think Lara's a moot point as Haymon won't allow one of his big name fighters to lose on the one network he competes with. All the chatter coming from the Lara side is simply intended to raise his profile without actually taking the fight.

Hell yea they would. If he's getting 1.3 from an unknown then it's only common sense that he'd get big numbers with Ward and easily over 1.5 w/ Lara. As dull as Lara may be, people know he's legit and everyone's dying for Golovkin to take a real fight.

I agree that his polarity is not growing. The discontentment with his competition seems to be though.

GGG pulled 1.5 million with this card. The rest of the card averaged 1.3 million ... not GGG's fight. Like it or not an undercard featuring unknowns is going to create a disparity which isn't GGG's fault. Managing to hit 1.5 million for this fight is impressive.
