Canelo Alvarez hasn’t made the junior middleweight limit in more than a year, though he hasn’t exactly been that far away from it.
After losing his world titles to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013 in a bout held with a contractual catch-weight limit of 152 pounds, Alvarez has been in three non-title bouts held slightly over the division’s 154 pound limit, coming in at 155 for his stoppage of Alfredo Angulo, 155 for his split decision over Erislandy Lara, and 154.5 for his third-round knockout this past Saturday of James Kirkland.
