Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Impressed by Canelo’s Poise With Kirkland

Although Canelo Alvarez scored three knockdowns on James Kirkland, including the sensational one-punch knockout that laid Kirkland out, he first had to weather an assault in the opening minutes.

The way he did that, along with the result, caught the eye of Alvarez’s promoter, Hall of Fame fighter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions.

“Kirkland came on so strong but Canelo kept his poise. He tried to keep his distance, but Kirkland was just so relentless,” De La Hoya said immediately afterward. “What really impressed me was his defense. He was dodging the left hooks that Kirkland was throwing. And the body shots — he knew that the body shots would do it. He used everything in his arsenal. But the most impressive punch was the body shot.

He outlanded Kirkland 29-15 in the second round, where he apparently gassed out.

You know it only lasted 3 rounds, right? His stamina is still a question mark.

It's true, those body shots were making Kirkland grimace/cringe in pain

he was fighting a walking punching bag he wasnt throwing a lot but everything he threw landed. u could tell he was gassed, his output decreased drastically and he was just sittin on the ropes.

He kept his cool, but things where only not going his way for about a few seconds on the first he landed a punch that rly didn't look all that strong on kirkland and all the threat was out of Kirklands punches it was good win for Canelo for me from that second Kirkland had nothing after that 0. Kirkland never recovered his punch, but he tried very hard God bless his soul.
