Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Not Giving Up on Frankie Gomez Just Yet

You can add the namesake of Golden Boy Promotions to the list of executives disappointed in junior-welterweight prospect Frankie Gomez for coming in tremendously overweight and having his bout with Humberto Soto canceled this past Saturday on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland.

Gomez-Soto was supposed to be the televised co-feature and was also to be preceded by the HBO replay of Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. But he said he fell sick two weeks ago. Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez said Frankie Gomez didn’t inform them until the week of the fight. The weight limit was raised from 141 to 145, and still Frankie Gomez came in at 147.5.

As undisciplined as he might be, he's still too talented to just give up on.

Frankie Gomez seems like he's right on the edge of either becoming great or becoming a bust.

Hopefully he figures it out soon.

Robert Diaz said it well..."We need to sit down, and his team needs to start being a little more hands-on and with more authority."

Yeah. He's only 23, which is both good and bad...he's still very young and has everything in front of him, but he seems too immature at the moment.

I guess you can look at it this way...if he's this undisciplined and unfocused with his training at this point in his career, it's probably a good thing he didn't fight Soto.

Change the career trajectory...and just get Gomez in the ring this year and active this year.

Gomez better take this chance and live up to his potential or he will be a never was with great potential which is the worst thing a non injured fighter can be honestly.

Frankie's overrated ass is lucky that he has a good promoter who's willing to give him third and fourth chances.

If it where up to me I'd given him the finger and kicked em to the curve cause that's essentially what Gomez did to everybody that was counting on him including the fans.

I hoestly don't see it. He can't even be disciplined enough to get to fight night. That kinda stuff only gets worse with age usually. Good luck

They can't really afford to mail it in on Gomez just yet their roster isn't that deep
