Ruslan Chagaev will make the first defense of his WBA heavyweight title versus Francesco Pianeta in a battle of heavyweight southpaws, to take place July 11 at GETEC Arena in Magdeburg, Germany.

Surely with Tyson Fury due to relinquish the European title, it makes sense to have this fight the far more meaningful & prestigious EBU title rather then this WBA plastic belt!

This is the mediocrity of WBA. Two fighters, no one who follows hw boxing cares about, facing off for a faux title. **** the WBA

I have a feeling Chagaev is shot enough to lose this one.

This is a pretty good fight actually. Especially considering Wilder is looking to face Molina.

How can the WBA sanction this?! Disgraceful.

Belts and titles aside, this isn't actually a bad tach up. Chagaev will lose if he turns up like he did against Fres.

Pianeta with a win can establish himself alongside the likes of Ustinov, Fury, Wach and Price, outside competitive fringe contenders on the periphery of contender status.

A Pianeta win could really mix things up and bring contenders towards the WBA belt and another potential deserving Wladimr mandatory. Fuvk the possibility of seeing Chagaev vs Wlad again.

You may very well be right. He has taken up with Pedro Diaz lately, is Diaz believed he was slipping or was not taking camp serious or simply hasn't not the abilities anymore he would not be wasting his time.

As much as I like Ruslan, this may be a bridge too far for him. Pianeta may be a light puncher but he does all the basics very well. I'll say close decision, split win for Pianeta.

Is it any worse than Povetkin versus Rahman ? I don't believe it is. It is a joke Chagaev has this belt, but their is a clamour in the WBC division as of the last 12-24 month, eyes were taken of the WBA regular belt whilst everyone else ran for the WBC vacated belt and a pop at the eventual winner.

Chagaev putting his energies into a WBA quest are not overlooked when when you have guys like Chisora contesting the no.1 spot for the WBO. All divisions and orgs are farcical.

The coveted Ring belt goes some way to clearing this nonsense up, but we're deprived of the fights we want to see for soft matchmaking in the governing bodies rankings system. It's old news.

Do we really want to see Pianeta-Klitschko fight again? He was grossly overmatched the first time, I don't see how he does better a second time around.
