  • Comments Thread For: Team Golovkin Defend Choice of Monroe Jr. As Opponent

Gennady Golovkin has affirmed his place as the best middleweight in the world, to where essentially any divisional contender he faces is viewed as a mismatch. Willie Monroe Jr. represents the worst case scenario of an optional title defense, with Golovkin as high as an 80-1 favorite in their May 16 clash, which airs live on HBO from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Until the unbeaten knockout artist is able to get his fellow titlists – including World middleweight champion Miguel Cotto – in the ring, his team has to search for new ways to maintain focus and interest. In selecting Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6KOs) for this bout, Golovkin will have to deal with a slick southpaw who has never been dropped or stopped and also comes in at the hottest point of his career.

Heh. Brook-Gavin, Khan-Algieri, Gonzales-Sosa, Golovkin-Monroe Jr... all awful matchups. Canelo-Kirkland is the only one where the latter can legitimately give the prior problems, [and maybe algieri too] and even then he's still like a 7/1 favorite. Cotto-Geale is not horrendous but I thought he'd either fight Canelo (guess that didn't work out, didn't hear about it) or GGG (wasn't he the mandatory?)

Yea stop wasting your time. That opponent selection is indefensible.

when nobody wants to fight you, you do what you can.

What is truly inexcusable is when everyone wants to fight you and you chose a mediocre opponent.

GGG is my boy, but if he wants me to take him serious about testing himself against a southpaw, I'd like to see him fight Stevenson then. That won't happen because of Showtime/HBO issues, I know they are in different divisions but I think he would move up.

Since that can't happen at the very fight Lee, he still kills him as well. He should just move up really, beating a bum in the 168 division is better than beating a bum in the 160 division at least.

ggg wants to pick on smaller fighters I think they know once he fights andre ward he is in trouble he keeps looking good against bums to increase his fan base and give this persona that he knocks out anyone who steps in the ring with him. if he wants the big names and wanted a southpaw lara would be the best option or even fighting a big guy in Chavez would be good for him until he fights a known name none of the big names will see him as marketable

He shouldn't have to face a southpaw 2 divisions above his to be taken seriously.

Andre Ward has become the Savior for Cotto fans who don't want GGG anywhere near their boy.

GGG knocks out both in my opinion...and remember, Ward is in tune up mode.

80-1 odds? Its times like these that I wish I had a crisp Benjamin just laying around in case Jr pulls of the upset. With that said, golovkin isn't going to face any resistance until he's in there with some world class talent. That's not saying that his opponents haven't been good, its just that golovkin makes good fighters look like tomato cans.
