Comments Thread For: Callum Smith Ready To Impress, Eyes World Title Shot

Callum Smith will unleash months of frustration at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on Saturday night and says another win will prove he’s ready for a massive fight this summer.

Smith has been out for nearly six months with a hand injury following his comprehensive win over former World title challenger Nikola Sjekloca in November in Liverpool in a third defence of his WBC International Super Middleweight title.

The 25-year-old is ranked at four in the WBC and will announce a big fight in the coming weeks in his hometown in June, and Smith believes victories in Birmingham and on a big night in Merseyside this summer will lead to him closing in on a world title shot.

His last fight was a decent step up (admittedly not world class) and then he had 6 months out injured.

There's been a few dud opponents but he hasn't been brought through terribly.

I wonder who the big name is that they're mentioning for June.

The BBBofC have ordered Smith/Fielding for the vacant British title, so could we please just get that out of the way before any talk of Micky Mouse World title fights that don't actually mean anything?!!!!!!!!................................. .................

Olegs Fedetovs is just a heavy bag with arms and legs and Callum Smith will learn zero from facing him, but Smith doesn't make the matches, does he. He's the one who does the fighting and, so far, he's shaping ok. There's talent there. He's 6' 3" tall and has the tools to box from outside and utilise the advantages of height and reach but he also knows the value of body shots and is good at whipping them in on both flanks. Callum isn't going to be taking out top guys by chinning them with single punches but it seems to me he hits hard enough to get anybody's full attention, and liver shots bring a world of pain, no matter how tough you are. Smith's developing an all round game and, after giving this next farce a miss, I'll be looking forward to seeing him against somebody testing. The kid's a real prospect imo.
