BTW this is not about Manny Pacquiao, its about how the use of defense has changed over the last 10-15yrs. Defense should be used to set up your offense. Floyd uses his defense, but only throws one punch at a time, never combinations and he is rewarded for it. James Toney is the perfect example of how defense is supposed to work and the kind of defense judges should be rewarding. He did not just use defense to run out the clock. He used it to set up counter punches, combinations and body punches. He stayed in the pocket in much the same way as Floyd uses his shoulder role, but he used his shoulder role to set off an explosive beautiful display of counter punches. That is the only way defense should be rewarded on the cards. Floyd is the antithesis of this, he uses his defense to not get hit, but he rarely makes the other fighter pay, and when he does it is one punch at a time. Now if he used his shoulder roll to stay in the pocket and throw punches instead of spin out and run then and only then should his style and defense be rewarded by the judges. Lara is another example of defense not being used to set up an offense and that is why he lost to Canelo. But, the judges were very close to giving the fight to Lara, very close. Algieri vs. Provo is another example. Algieri, was given way too much credit for his defense, since he used it to virtually survive. Ward, is yet another.
Just look at Toney's fight with Iran Barkley or Vasily Jirov and you will see how defense should be used. BTW Toney is a much better counter puncher than Floyd ever could be. Floyd cannot be the best counter puncher ever if he does not throw combinations. Hell, I think this is a new term that should be used for judges in order to define how defense and whether is should be given such high importance in judging. Maybe it should be called the James Toney criteria for judging defensive scoring. If your defense is not used to set up your offense or your defense is only used to avoid contact the whole fight then it should not be rewarded. It is simple defense is used to hit and not get hit. Judges seem to be forgetting that 1st part of the equation.
