There's a certain pride there, but not the kind commonly thought. My theory is Manny placed so much of his religious faith in winning this particular fight that he cannot admit defeat. He basically put God to the test, and that's not advisable, as is laid out in the Gospel. Now, rather than admit he was remiss in guaranteeing a victory because God would deliver it, he won't admit to himself and others that he lost.
