Comments Thread For: Merchant on Why Mayweather-Pacquiao is Happening Now

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather finally meet after years of unsuccessful negotiations and acrimony between the two sides. Originally discussed after Pacquiao's stoppage of Miguel Cotto in November of 2009, for five long years, this fight was stalled - dying on the vine, a few times it seemed - before finally being consummated earlier this year.

Larry Merchant, formerly of HBO Sports and still a very interested observer of the sport, has an explanation for why they are just now squaring off.

I am no Merchant fan but he is most likely right about this. We as fans get all funky and forget that this is a big business where performers are trying to obtain the most they can. The fighters see it and the promoters see it. I think all the "he's scared of needles", "he's scared to lose his O", "he's this, he's that" was all a facade and the real reason is because all parties wanted to pad their pockets until they couldn't pad them no more.

This fight has become the talk of the sport for many years now and they knew that ultimately they were going to be able to squeeze fans of approximately a half billion dollars for one evening. If we think this wasn't all about the money then we need to turn off the boob tube and start reading some books.

It's all business, and not for the fans, at the end of the day.

That is true. Aside from that, the fans played a big role when they started demanding for the fight to happen. Chicken Floyd does not like this fight. He avoided the Pacman for several years. The media also played a big role in forcing chicken Floyd to take this fight. Chicken Floyd was cornered and nowhere to go except to fight Congressman Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's PPV numbers have for sure been in a spectacular downward spiral. He and Arum were finally forced to take this fight, they had no where else to turn.
