Someone who has actually fought, depending on their time doing so, can absolutely give the "layman" a better perspective on the many nuances of the sport. They've been in & out of gyms, worked with different trainers, fought around the country/world, fought every kind of fighter imaginable....They can give you an idea of what may be going on inside a fighter's head, at fight time, during training, when they get hit, etc.
But, that doesn't mean they know more about boxing history. It doesn't mean they are any better at correctly analyzing or predicting a fight. It doesn't mean they'll give a more accurate post-fight breakdown than the next guy.
If their experience gives them automatic superiority over the "layman", then you have to assume that a guy like Arturo Gatti could come in here & better explain every aspect of the game better than a guy like "Rockin1". But, I myself wouldn't assume that for a second.....
