Wouldn't be surprised, he can write off up to half of his tax liability on his adjusted gross income if he donates to tax exempt charities. Makes sense: he satisfies his tax liability, generates good press/publicity and he helps charities!

Can't write off cash handouts to people on the street. He'll be able to write off his the money donated from his share of the weigh-in tickets, and maybe the money donated to whatever US church that he attends during camp, but that's about it from the look of things.
