  • Comments Thread For: GGG's Coach on Ward's Return at 172, Fight Implications

Andre Ward versus Gennady Golovkin has been a topic of conversation for the past year in the boxing world. While Golovkin’s star has grown from coast to coast, Ward was in a dispute with his former promoter Goossen Tutor that has left him idle since November of 2013. Ward has since signed a deal with Roc Nation Sports and is scheduled to return on June 20th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. He is set to meet England’s Paul Smith.

While Ward has spent most of his professional career at Super Middleweight, his next fight with Smith is at a catch weight of 172 pounds as reported by BoxingScene.com

Ok,let's get this straight. At no point did Abel say that ward was running,so don't start that ****** argument. If the fight is going to happen, ward needs at least another fight to gain fan base, and the fight has to happen at 168,not the 172 Chavez weight. If ward chooses to go for kovalev at 175,he gets a pass in my book, because that's an even harder fight than GGG,and ward would have some serious stones to take that fight.

The 172 pound division is stacked. Ward, Fonfara, Chavez, Paul Smith. Can go on and on.

Seems like he's pacing himself for an upward move . No need to wait on GGG , as GGG and his team are always talking nonsense like ; Ward has to build his name up again , or this one ; were gonna clean out 160 before we move up . Why should Ward stick around for this kinda clown chatter . Instead , he can eventually fight Fonfara at 172 then properly pace himself up to Kovalev . Why should someone of Wards caliber and credentials wait for someone like GGG who still isn't as accomplished .

What credentials? Three fights he had 4 years ago? What has he done since? Why should GGG make any of his career decisions around a boxer who has not had a fight in a year and a half, fights in a different weight class and who is no longer relevant in the sport? Has anyone ever suggested that Ward should stick around waiting for GGG to move up? Is Ward that much of an idiot? OK, that last one is obvious so ignore that one.

I only want to see a GGG - Ward fight so that Ward's lunatic fans can STFU after. Having him move up to LHW would serve the same purpose so I'm all for it. I'm sure Kovalev would give him a title shot while he's waiting for the Stevenson mess to get cleared up.

Clown chatter? So Golovkin wanting to unify 160 is clown chatter, but Ward fighting a total of two fights, against two tune ups in a span of three years is legit lol.
