Comments Thread For: Roach: Really Strange, No Mayweather Rematch Clause

Freddie Roach, who trains WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, finds it very strange that Floyd Mayweather Jr. did not request a rematch clause for the upcoming May 2nd mega-fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather has had a rematch clause in place for most of his high profile pay-per-view fights. The biggest of his career, against Pacquiao, will not have the contract option of a rematch for either fighter.

The agreement for the May showdown has a 60-40 financial split in Mayweather's favor. Mayweather's company is the lead promoter and his team controls nearly ever aspect of the promotion. All of that could change if Pacquiao pulls off an upset.

Sounds to me like he just doesn't want to fight anymore.

      Take the money and retire.

Roach, it is simple. It is to avoid all the conspiracy theorists. With all the money involved, a rematch clause would just provide ammo for all the conspiracy theorists to go gun blazing and annoy the hell out of everyone, worse if the ends in controversy.

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is not convinced that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0, 26KOs) will fight again - win or lose - beyond May 2nd. During his recent media da

I hope he does fight one more time though.

I think there is no rematch clause because if Floyd loses, people would say it was a conspiracy and that he always planned on losing. The framework is in place for a deal to be made again should the need arise. But for Christ sake can we enjoy this match up something we never thought we'd see then look to the future?!?!?
