If they kept it as only 1 vs 2 could fight for it, it'd still be as prestigious as it was. But now that rank 2 vs rank 5 can fight for it, its useless.
Theres been some legit awful matchups for the RING title
Floyd vs Guerrero
Canelo vs Trout (Mayweather didn't exist apparently)
Khan vs Garcia (before Garcia was even known)
Hernandez vs Cunningham 2 (the rematch warranted RING championship, but the prior fight didn't... hmmm)
Just off the top of my head anyway
But just like lineage, it only matters if they follow some form of consensus. Imagine if Garcia didn't face Matthysse? Or just look at Hernandez now
Im surprised as a GGG fan you hold it in high regard considering Cotto holds it..
They have rules, they must have rules otherwise if they would bend their rules to the favour of Golovkin, Kovalev or whatever who, they would make their title less worthy. I mean if they want to keep the belt's respect they can't change their laid out rules just because they feel that Cotto isn't the best MW right now. There's a logic in it, why he got the RING belt. This cause is he beat Martinez who was the last MW lineal champ. Otherwise I guess the writers of the magzine would pick Golovkin over Cotto if they would fight but they can't bend their rules just because of this.
being undisputed champ (WBC+WBA+IBF+WBO) is what ultimately matters with all these alphabet titles.
And there are only two men who can lay claim to that honour in all weight classes combined, Bernard Hopkins who actually achieved the feat by bringing the titles together and Jermaine Taylor who won the titles by beating Hopkins but did not manage to keep them together as he refused a mandatory defense and was stripped of one of them, the IBF I believe.
This is the goal that GGG has set out for himself and there are two other fighters who may be able to achieve that goal one day, Kovalev and Wlad. I wish them all the best in their pursuit of the ultimate goal in the sport of boxing.
