I thought that was strange when at the start of the fight Lampley (or maybe someone else?) said that Provo would be a body aggressor. I said to my friend that if anything Lucas is known more for body punching than Ruslan. As it turned out neither guy really invested too much to the body.

It's insane to me that a boxer so limited does not go to the body more. I believe if Prov did then he might have broken Lucas down.

As far as scoring the fight, I never thought it was close until the 11th round. Ithink 116-112 is the right score.

provodnikov was doing more bodywork than matthysse early, it wasn't much bodywork(provo wasn't landing much of anything early), but matthysse was next to zero till around the 6th round

provodnikov also hurt matthysse to the body early

A few other myths I want to clear up:
-Matthysse's clinching -he clinched no more than 10-15 times in the whole fight!
-Lucas' headhunting/lack of bodywork, this was most probably a strategy, they know that Ruslan moves his head in the same robotic rhythm which you can time. Also, body punches require you to get in range and Ruslan's best weapon is the compact hook and this is what they were probably trying to avoid. He certainly didn't forget as you don't forget you're signature punch (he put Ortiz down in his last fight with a liver shot)
-Injured hand- he did injure his hand but he said it wasnt severe and it wasn't broken, Lucas said his legs were beginning to tire and that's why he gave up the last few rounds. He even said that it was like punching a wall. (Also, called Ruslan a rock)

I scored it 8-4 Lucas Matthysse on first watch and 7-5 second time and that was being generous. Compubox:
Quicker and more skillful, Matthysse, according to CompuBox, out-threw Provodnikov 1,034 to 755, outlanded him 327-201 and certainly landed the more crisp, more impactful shots.

I think one of Lampley's biggest problems is he gets something in his head and watches for it and comments on it rather than commenting on what's actually happening.

You notice it most when he's blatantly rooting for one fighter over another.

He's sometimes good for drama but his act is played out at this point.

Now Prov's past fights bring us to the truth regarding this myth. Prov has never had a body attack and from his ESPN2 days he was criticized by Teddy Atlas for being a head hunter. Provo's fight against Bradley HBO also criticized him for head hunting and going strictly to Bradley's head during the whole fight and also said if Provo had gone to the body he would of won the fight. As for Bradley he went to Provo's body and hurt him on a few occasions. His loss to Algieri, again HBO criticized him for having no body attack and just looking to land head shots all night. Many critics also noted if Provo had only gone to Algieri's body it would of changed the outcome of the fight.

As for the Matthysse fight. Once again punch stats show Provo only landed 35 compared to 24 for Lucas. That is not much of a difference and it shows that Provo's apparent incredible body attack that HBO credited with getting him back into the fight amounts to only a paltry 3 avg landed body punches per rd.

The sad thing is Provo's type of offense would make him a great body puncher, and when he does go to the body it looks good, but so far he refuses to deviate from his head hunter pattern.
hbo??? even bernard said lucas is not going to the body like he should.

I was watching like "wtf body punching are they talking about?" Glad I wasn't the only one to notice Lampley was just imagining punches for Provodnikov.
