  • Comments Thread For: Merchant: Speed is Big Factor in Mayweather-Pacquiao

Less than two weeks remain before Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will step in the ring to face each other on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. They will battle for the WBO/WBA/IBF welterweight championships. The WBC will also have a special emerald belt present for the contest.

The two fighters have held one particular advantage over every single opponent - speed. Both fighters were much faster than their opponents.

We will soon find out which of them is actually faster.

Former HBO expert analyst Larry Merchant sees speed as the biggest factor in the fight, because of the two fighters will realize for the first time that he is not the faster man and then has to dig deep for something else in his arsenal.

Timing will be the advantage of Floyd over the speed of Manny. Manny wins if he can offset the timing of Mayweather by volume punching, faking and moving. Relentless assault with great stamina and absorbing the best blows of Mayweather will be the key for Pacman.

I wouldn't say "absorbing the best blows" is a key strategy, its dangerous to take unnecessary damage. An accumulation of punches will take a toll on anyone. I just can't see Pac dodging Mayweather's counters, the guy is a sharpshooter, and given the magnitude of this fight I think Mayweather will be on point. I hope Manny wins though lol.

Just saying to withstand best punches from Floyd. Avoiding is the best if he can because Floyd will hit you with his best shot...

Floyd couldn't even time Maidana the way he wants to and Chino is 10x slower than Manny.

This is the battle of Freak of nature which is Pacman (fighting bigger guys most of his carreer and has great stamina) vs the gifted which is Mayweather (highly skilled). If Mayweather still able to box for 12 rounds without tiring then he wins.

Floyd did time Maidana in a lot of spots. The comparison between Maidana and Pac isn't there.

Maidana's lack of speed has nothing to do with Mayweather looking so-so. It was Maidana's wreckless aggression and inside/pressure style combined that seemed to make Floyd hesitate defensively.

With Manny, Floyd won't have to worry about Pac smothering him and fighting him on the inside, nor will Pac be fighting dirty or rough-Pac is at his best fighting at mid-range.

I think punches might be a big factor in this fight

Also, the IBF title isn't at stake in this fight, might want to correct that
