Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” — The Name Isn’t His But The Blame Is

by David P. Greisman - He was loved because of his name — Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the son of the Mexican legend, the namesake of a man who was a world titleholder in three divisions and the true lineal champion in two, a Hall of Famer, an all-time great, a national icon and an inspiration to a generation of fighters. They would follow Junior because of who he was, or rather because of who his father was to them.

He was derided because of his name as well, a son who never could follow in his father’s formidable footsteps but who would be compensated well anyway, receiving opportunities and paydays that never would have been available to another boxer with the same skill level and a different bloodline. He would be afforded attention but not respect, seen as a child of privilege who would take full advantage of status that didn’t match his stature.

The reality, as it often does, lies somewhere in-between.

Chavez Jr. became more than a novelty. His stint as a world titleholder was dubious, but he was a legitimate contender, even if a limited one. He achieved more than had ever been expected of him. In more than a decade as a pro, he had demonstrated more grit and talent than many other sons who take to the ring after their famous fathers, kin who often lace up the gloves to cash in rather than doing so out of passion.

He also manipulated the system when possible and reaped the benefits of a sport that loved Senior and lusted for the money that could be made with Junior. [Click Here To Read More]

I wish JCC jr the best but there are alot of poor Mexican fighters who want to earn a life changing payday. JCC jr grew up a rich kid and already has alot of his own money.

Chavez Jr turned a down rumored $10 million dollars offer to fight triple G from Top Rank ( source Larry Merchant), he turned down a multimillion $ offer to fight Froch. What is wrong with him and his management team. What a dummy he did not cash in.

"What a dummy" is spot on. Chavez Jr. needs to listen to his father or retire ASAP.

JCC Jr never needed boxing, never respected boxing, and tried to "play" boxing. You don't PLAY boxing like baseball or soccer. You FIGHT in boxing.

JCC Jr never had the mental discipline to do what champs do to get to the elite level. JCC Jr is a chump who has surfed the wave of his father's name for far too long.

Did you guys see how out of shape and out of focus he looked? CHUMP! Go home and smoke some more pot.

Seriously....couldnt have said it better myself! He couldve fought GGG(a smaller guy that Jr likes to fight) for 10 millie plus ppv money, plus 4 more fights under TR vs probably ok opponents on HBO for good paydays. Hell, he couldve fought Froch on ppv and made a killing on ppv....He mustve thought he was better than he was.

Few boxers may have lost a big purse in very winnable fight against Chavez. Names such as Stevenson, Froch, Abraham, DeGale, Direll, Golovkin were probably counting on Jr. to get a PPV date but it seems plans have changed or at least delayed. I think if Jr. comes back as SMW he most likely would be facing Medina, Gilberto Ramirez, Patrick Nielsen, Periban, J'Leon Love, Badou Jack or even Felix Sturm. And Julio could still get few good results depending if he is committed, disciplined and dedicated (a real big IF).

Sergey should have had a shirt showing Stevenson the pimp. That would let Sergey have many different depictions of Stevenson working his sick, evil, misogynistic career as a pimp. And then Sergey could have a T-shirt depicting George W. Bush as a chimp and offend nobody in the process.
