In Ireland we are recognized for our great amateur boxing, especially since the introduction of the high performance team. we have a number of boxers currently boxing in the world boxing series. But transitioning our amateur backround to the pros as been a challenge. Now im not going to sit here and praise every irish boxer just because im irish. I think in part it is a problem whit finding the right promoter. Lets take John joe Nevin for example, he boxed at the highest level of amateur boxing for a long time, lost a very very close decision to luke Campbell of england in the Olympics, but where has been since turning pro? he has been in the news a couple of times for being arrested ya,but in the ring,he has had only 3 pro fights, close to no tv exposure (which is not too bad at this stage i suppose) has beaten nobody, and signed whit Murphys promotions. Murphys promotions? really,Luke Campbell has had alot of set backs recently whit his father having cancer and so on,and is still getting the fights he needs to move forward and getting his name out their.
Jason quigley on the other hand, also had a brilliant amateur career, picked up a sliver medal at the world championships and ended up signing whit golden boy. Ok golden boy is not as big as it once was,but he is fighting regularly, and getting plent of tv exposure on friday night fight. he is in my opinion irelands next big star.
Now theirs andy lee and all ya, but why is it so hard for irish boxers to transition to the pro ranks, now their is a good few irish prospects in the pro ranks at the moment, but i fear like always they will diminish or stay at that club level boxing. This may be in part to the bad management and promoters that they sign whit. Maybe in part its their own decision to just fight for the bit of money they get in the small venues and slack off a bit and lose the desire they had.
what do you think?
after Lee who will ireland have in the pro ranks to be excited about??
will we ever see an irish boxer reach the heights of the world level that is expected today??
is it down to poor management and or promoters or their own downfall??
I just dont understand how such a high level amateur backround cant be transitioned to the pros, Now before someone says o thats amateur boxing not pro, well top level amateur boxing is just as skilled as most pro boxing you see today and provides them whit some great fundamentals to build on in the pro ranks.
