Thank heavens some people have a clue on here! I'm an Aussie, and Geale is PPV here in Australia, Cotto's promoter know what they are doing, and Geale is happy to fight at 157lbs. What other title opportunities are going to come along at 34. This will be a great fight!

Geale wouldn't have the fight if he hadnt taken 157, hopefully he gives it a go though, if he is financially penalised he stills fights for the lineage and belt, the man is far from broke. In an ideal world Id like to see him ignore the catchweight and take the penalties, he'll make a packet on ppv back home regardless.

I've read some of these fines for missing weight can be pretty heavy, you really see Geale saying "forget this 157, it's too taxing" and coming in at 158 or higher? Curious to see what what the reaction from Cotto's team to that would be. How much complaining would they do?

This is Daniel's last chance at lineage or a belt for that matter, I expect he'll come in at at least 160, I will not be surprised if he forgoes the CW limit the penalties will relatively nominal by the time he takes his usual home figures. he is already set for life, middleweight lineage would establish his legacy. I really do not believe money is the motivator here.
I certainly understand the urgency from Geale's side, as given his age this'll no doubt be his last shot. Legacy fight vs Cotto, he's being seen as a stepping stone for Cotto on the way to Canelo
I'd find it awesome if Geale did come in heavier, but still at Middle to give himself a better chance at victory if he came in heavier than 157 knowing he'd be fined then we can no doubt say the money was the motivation, since he'll lose $$ for every lb over 157
to be continued, and now looking a bit more forward to the fight than I was before

Appreciate the positivity, and glad I shut up all those aggressive defenders of catchweights ... it got really nasty around the time of Pac-Cotto with a really long thread titled "Welterweight is 141-147" which it clearly isn't but anyway

not to bash, but you really think Geale will pass on making the catchweight?

I'd like to see him just come in at 160, not bothered about fines just signalling his intent to win the bet. I know he is set with money for life, he doesn't need a Cotto payday. This will be his last chance, I also think he needs to stop Cotto or he will be ROBBED.
I think it would be hilarious if Cotto pulled out upon learning Geale had just come in at 160 for the title and lineage, Cotto may have trouble lifting himself from the toilet to make the ring walk.
I don't see Daniel attempting to make the 157 and failing short a pound or so, if he can't make it he can't do it, then he will just focus on his usual 160. His team believe he can do it comfortably, maybe that is just a ruse. I know one thing, he is not just coming for a pay day, he is coming for that belt. He could vacate if the WBC enforce GGG and then fight for lineage with Canelo himself. Either way I'm excited and convinced Real Deal wins, I would love to see him face Canelo. Losing to GGG appears to make you an insta bum on this site. That guy needs to move up to super middle and start fighting competitive fights for his fans, only a sadist would want to see GGG vs Cotto.

I'm actually quietly confidant even at 157 Geale can still win, it just irks me Cotto has stooped so low though. Geale is not recognised for power at the actual weight, I think it would be fitting if he stopped him coming in at 157 or 160.
I doubt they'll attempt to shred further weight upon realising he can't do it. Simply focusing on the fight plan and weight stipulated to fight for the belt itself ie 160.

to Catchweight or not to catchweight, that is the question.

I think his age will make it exceedingly difficult to make that kind of weight, Sergio had to be 159 Geale is naturally a bigger guy and his being asked to to shred even more !

Will it be seen as "unprofessional" since he's violating the agreed upon contracted weight? Or do more folks take your and my side of it
that Geale should forget trying to kill himself by making the weight and just fight. **it would really bring to light the whole concept of catchweights and how much nonsense they are, especially in title fights
HBO/Roach and Cotto would likely play it off as Geale being unprofessional or what not
well if Cotto doesn't fight, he doesn't get paid, and if no fight, ... there'd be a lot of money lost, and a lot of pissed off people (HBO, Barclays, etc) I will say that much. Geale-Cotto at 157 is disappointing as is, Geale-Cotto not coming off would be a Level 5 **** storm
Not the exact same situation, but reminds me of when Broner lost his Super Feather on the scales and HBO had to pay Escobedo more to go through with the fight. Broner whooped his ass and I vividly recall Escobedo crying in the post fight intereview about being "cheated" IMO you can't have it both ways ..either take the extra money and accept what happens ... or don't take the money and as a result don't fight, if you really feel you're at that great a disadvantage.
But for me you cannot just take the money, and then literally cry about it.
yeah Golovkin just cannot seem to get the big names in with him so I figure he'll have to move up to Super Middle by next year if not sooner with Chavez Jr losing, maybe GGG can get Froch?
what I find funniest about these catchweights is in the build up to Cotto-Pacquiao Freddie Roach was quoted as saying they'd "Beat Cotto at any weight" if that was the case, why fight at a max of 145 then?
agreed on Cotto-Geale .. if Geale gave Golovkin lots of trouble, okay I could see Cotto needing the CW, but GGG blew him out of the water
as you said Geale isn't a big puncher, has only 16 wins by stoppage, but he is taller
I do hope Geale does forget the catchweight ... as they're obviously using 157 to tip the odds that much more in Cotto's favor, so Geale should come in at 159-160 and put the pressure right back on Cotto
hey who knows, lets say absolute worst case, Geale comes in at 159.5 and Cotto cancels the fight ... regardless of how boxing history looks back on it, IMO Cotto would deserve more of the blame
and maybe long term this will benefit boxing and limit favorites trying to weasel as many advantages as possible.Last edited by MJ406; 04-19-2015, 01:07 PM.
