I know that the padding is placed differently but how much of a difference does it make. Maidana uses MX whereas Matthysse uses powerlock and they both have huge power, does it make a significant or noticeable difference.

One is made out of foam and one is made out of horsehair. Huge difference.

If Matthysse wore horsehair gloves his punches would be deadly.

If that's the case, I wish he did!

Yea some fighters just need that extra protection, damn shame. I'd like to see him fight with punchers gloves just once but he'd probably end up injuring himself so it is what it is I guess

Mx are sort of like Cleto Reyes. Horsehair -far more compact. Where the Powerlock padding gives a lot more when you land flush, so you loose a lot of the shock on your body(hands/wrist) when you land flush, you loose a bit of the power, but in return it's not so harsh on your wrist and hands upon impact.

Big punchers sometimes used power locks, so their hands are at times able to constantly absorb hard shots landing flush on their opponents, since their padding gives upon impact, and if their hands are not conditioned, with their punching power they can break their hands pretty bad if they accidentally land on their opponents hip/forehead/..etc

If your hands are good and strong, and can punch, you would favor the Horsehair gloves. If you have a history with troublesome hands, power locks seem like a good fit, but i would still go with something with more foam, there's more proven brands out there for those type of gloves.

I own a pair of Reyes, but seen the MX gloves and Powerlocks, they have them in our gym. The difference could be very little, but with these professionals, the small bit of protection could be the difference between a healthy hand and broken one. Long career/short career.
