  • Comments Thread For: Quillin: I Had to Respect Lee After 1st-Round Knockdown

Andy Lee hit the canvas with 30 seconds left in the first round and was back in action with about 20 seconds to survive before the bell. Peter Quillin wasn’t in a rush to try to finish Lee off, though.

He had too much respect for what Lee was capable of doing.

“How much respect can you have for somebody that’s punching you hard and trying to take you out of there?” Quillin said at the post-fight press conference. “Every guy who try to go in and finish him off get knocked out. I’d have to be a dummy to go up in there. I got dropped because I was going in there not conscious of what he’s able to do.”

Lee was coming off a pair of counter-punch knockouts with his vaunted southpaw right hook: one over John Jackson in June 2014 and one over Matt Korobov last December. It was the right hook that dropped Quillin in the seventh round. Lee led with a left cross, then took a step back as Quillin came forward with a right of his own. Lee’s counter hook landed and Quillin went down on all fours, quickly rising.

Lee's last few fights have made me respect Chavez Jr's chin WAY more. He ate Lee's best punches like Halloween candy. I guess he got his dad's iron forged jaw.

I think either man could of stopped the other man. I thought Quillin got the better of most of the exchanges too.

Something tells me Peter Quillin is not a risk-taker.

Quillen shouldn't feel ashamed of his performance, but he should be ashamed of his conditioning. He should've made weight, and maybe Lee wouldn't have been able to recover. Quillen knew he had to pace himself because he went through too much to make weight. If he has to go to Ireland, then so be it! The champ just came to your backyard (Quillen literally walked to the fight), so Quillen should do the same!

At anytime Lee could've stopped Quillin but Haymon has too many influences in this PBC same thing with Broner, John Molina could've knocked him out when ever he wanted but we all know was paid a heavy amount to take that loss. These fights could be great if they just let the best man win. They won't and can't to much invested in the booshii ass athletes that think they're Gods gift to boxing.
Danny lost still won. Too much corruption in boxing and Al is leading the way to.the demise of our sport.

Yes, that was what I remember in my head about this fight.

I remember saying, damn, Lee looks so damn small in there compared to Chavez. I was expecting Chavez to BLAST him out, but it didn't happen quite as it should have considering the size advantage.

There are a few fighters like that.

Quillin looked very solid against Lee who looked very skinny by comparison. GGG looks very solid and thick next to everyone he fights outside of Curtis Stevens who is built very similar to GGG just shorter. Chavez is naturally a solid dude, its not hard to tell. The way he puts on weight he just has a naturally strong build to him.
