Mares has not looked good in his last few fights and Santa Cruz has not impressed either. And both men's last few fights were tune-up / stay-busy type of fight. This is hardly the best way to build up a Mares-LSC clash and create excitement. This bout is by no means special at the moment. B-level fight.

Walters vs. Lomachenko is levels above and THE fight to make at 126.

Still don't understand why Abner Mares signed with Al Haymon, .

Gary Russell Jr. is clearly Al Haymon's favorite 122-126 pounder. And Leo Santa Cruz is the second favorite. Abner Mares is the odd man out.

Mares has accomplished more than Gary Russell Jr. and Leo Santa Cruz maybe ever will yet he gets relegated to an NBC Sports Network slot while Gary Russell Jr. headlines Showtime Championship Boxing and Leo Santa Cruz gets the co-main slot of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

Whereas GBP got Mares the co-main slot on the Mayweather vs. Guerrero PPV and main events against the likes of Jhonny Gonzalez, Anselmo Moreno, Joseph Agbeko, and Eric Morel.

Mares had a loyal team in GBP and Espinoza Boxing and now Haymon is pimpin' him out.

May 2nd is gonna be the most boring card in recent times. All the undercards will suck and the main even will be senior citizens huggin n clinchin to a decision.
All of you excited for may 2 will be disappointed, mark my words. This is horrible for boxing. You are talking about the biggest fight ever and the quality is beyond laughable. What can people expect from boxing if may 2 doesnt deliver? Why would they tune in for other fights if the biggest fight in history was ****?

LSC says he will fight Joe Schmoe from the local Tire Pro service center instead.
I've never seen anything like this guy, fighting stiff after stiff and claiming he wants to fight top guys..
            Fk this dude...

If LSC doesn't want to take on anymore real fights, he needs to retire

With Jhonny Gonzalez taking that big loss, Mares-Santa Cruz is the biggest fight on the docket for Abner, so his willingness to take the fight on short notice isn't much a shock.

Still, that fight does pretty good business on it's own (in Texas or California), so I don't see them wasting that fight on a PPV card that was basically sold out and on the verge of smashing every revenue record once the contracts were signed.

Santa Cruz even named his baby after Al Haymon (seriously), so he knows he ain't getting any hard fights soon. Dude gets over a million for fighting actual cans. I'd be naming my kid after him too if he could get me that money without breaking a sweat.

P.S this undercard is actually terrible for dedicated followers of the sport. I understand that probably 75% or more of its viewers are casuals or non-followers so it doesn't matter to them but i think they could have put some better fights on the undercard.

The reason i say that is because there was an opportunity to push a future Mayweather or Pacquiao opponent on that undercard for a huge audience, to sell their next fight if that fighter looked impressive.

But it's already been said, the fights doesn't need selling. It's just a little disappointing for us fans who follow the sport daily.

You don't get it do you. Haymon is about the fighters themselves and their future. Mares has already been on the big stage plenty of times and even been considered top 10 p4p and has made good money already.

Not saying that he is one of the richest boxers but he's had his shine already and haymon just wants to give the spotlight to younger fighters for the time being to build them up and get their exposure up and then set up a big fight like Mares-LSC.

The only problem is that LSC is literally fighting tomato cans every single fight, and he should definitely be fighting way better opposition even if they aren't as good or big names as Mares he's straight up just fighting nobodies. He has an exciting fan-friendly style to make good fights but his stock is dropping in the eyes of the public boxing world due to the fact that hes literally fighting people that 15-0 prospects trying to get some alright opponents in should be fighting instead. Not someone making a million dollars and holding a WBC belt. That's definitely a no-no and a disgrace.

I see what Al's doing clearly but this situation with LSC makes no sense to me...I'm even ok with broner getting these comeback fights after a rough one with maidana he's fighting decent opposition but he's eventually going to step up and have to start fighting people for a title and then defending it.
LSC fought and defended the title against ****ing bums though.

I get al's whole thing, get his fighters easy paydays and build them up fighting nobodies for a million dollars, so that when it's time to step up against big opponents incase they lose and start being fed to prospects or retire they'll already be set financially. But holding a title hostage fighting bums for millions is a joke, I agree with that.
