Of course there was rehydration!! It just wasn't as much as now a days! Paddy Barnes (irish Amateur boxer) tweeted the other that that he weighed in at 111 lbs(49 Kg) and within 20 minutes tweeted that he was 116 lbs(53 kg)

Also are you sure that fight was same day weigh in? I'm pretty sure same day weigh ins were stopped in 1983-5

Same day weigh-in's didn't stop until the very start of the 1990's.

Those were the good old days with only a few hours to put on weight between the weigh in and the fight. A fighter at the top end of his weight class might be a bit hungry and thirsty at the weigh in and might eat and drink and gain 3 or 4 pounds but no more than that. If he gained more than a few pounds he would be bloated. None of this stuff of middleweights fighting in the welterweight division. None of this stuff of a fighter coming into the ring 20 pounds heavier than he weighed in at. It was a much better system and boxing should return to it but it won't.

Hagler was not a big man he was proportionate and had no weak area's on his body. At 5'9" he easily made weight and often was at 158.5 -159. He could rehydrate with 2 small meals and fluids and be at 168-70.
The deal with adding weight after the scales is to try and hit your best sparring weight as the fight drew closer. If you did your best work at 166-70
then after the scale you go to that "best weight"! Hagler had all the weight
situations down pat he knew his body and was a terrificly conditioned boxer.
Everyone is different a fighter can hurt himself if he doesn't find the right proccess to loose then replenish.
