  • Comments Thread For: Mathews-Barroso Finalized For WBA Title at Echo Bill

Derry Mathews must now face Venezuelan KO king Ismael Barroso for the Interim WBA World Lightweight Championship on Saturday 18th April at the Echo Arena after the Champion Richar Abril was forced to withdraw again through illness.

Mathews versus Barroso headlines a triple-title card alongside Liam Smith’s challenge for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Light-Middleweight Championship against David Ezequiel Romero plus the clash for the Vacant British Flyweight Championship between Iain Butcher and Luke Wilton, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Abril was forced to withdraw from his title defence against Mathews in March after coming down with dengue fever from a mosquito bite, but has been forced to withdraw again as he is still reeling from the after-effects of the virus that has left him unable to train.

Never heard of this kid but I'm just having visions of Matthews getting sparked out

My vision is Derry getting clocked around a few times before pulling off a come back KO

No idea who he is, but his KO record looks impressive. Could be a tough night for Matthews.

A bit of a confusing situation. Perez is the new title holder, Abril is the 'Champ in recess'..and the winner of Matthews Vs Barroso is the interim holder?

I wonder who fights who next.
