Comments Thread For: Paul Smith Vacates Title; Dillian Whyte Has No Bids

The BBBoC’s latest championship circulars threw up a few compelling fights for both the British and English title. The most interesting piece of news is that Liverpool’s Paul Smith, 35-5 (20), has relinquished the British 168lb title, leaving his younger brother Callum, 15-0 (11), and city rival Rocky Fielding, 20-0 (11), free to contest the vacant belt. Purse bids are due in on Wednesday the 13th of May.

Frankie Gavin, 22-1 (13), could find himself in a local derby later this year as Glenn Foot, 14-0 (6), and Sam Eggington, 14-2 (8), are to fight an eliminator for the welterweight belt. Eggington is from Birmingham, so a win for the in-form fighter could see a Gavin-Eggington local derby, assuming of course that Gavin does not relinquish to move on to world or European level.

A bit naive by Dooley, Dillan Whyte had previously been up for British Title eliminator against Gary Cornish but Cornish backed out even though there was multiple bids.

The English Title would be a backward step for Whyte especially against John McDermott who hasn't fought for over 2 years and was asked by Whyte to fight as one his comeback contests but said he'd need at least 5 months to get fit!!

No Promoter has any confidence in McDermott actually turning up.

I wouldn't say I was being naive, I did a news brief on the Cornish fight a while back. I reported the Board's news and said it was a blow, it is IMO. Whyte's one or two fights from the British, depending on how things pan out. If a bid had been made on his behalf a date would have been set and they could have set the ball in motion to have McDermott stripped, presuming he doesn't take the fight or show up.

You can say the English is a backward step if you like, but he's yet to take a forward step title-wise so it's an incorrect statement to make, factually speaking.
