  • Comments Thread For: Mathews-Barroso For WBA Belt? - Abril To Withdraw

According to sources with knowledge of the details, BoxingScene.com has been advised that WBA lightweight champion Richar Abril (19-3-1, 8KOs) will not go forward with his scheduled fight against Derry Mathews (37-9-2, 20KOs) on April 18th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

This would mark the second time where Abril withdrew from the Mathews fight and the Cuban fighter has withdrawn from other scheduled contests as well.

The WBA is reportedly going to strip Abril and make him a "champion in recess" for inactivity. Abril has barely been averaging one fight per year.

I dont know if they should even sanction this fight, i mean barroso is a beast even if he is only ranked number 15,granted he has not fought top class opponents as of yet,but he is very good and big, i would fear for mathews health in this fight, i mean the man is hardly cutting it a British domestic level, his last fight was against a 21-13 fighter, how dose that warrant a title shot, as for abril he should definitely be stripped of his title

You think Derry doesn't deserve his shot then???
Gotta disagree, the mans a warrior and deserves a world title shot at the very least.

Im not dis*****g the fact that hes a warrior,i am in fact dis*****g his chances against barroso. Mathews has been in some grueling wars over the years and i think the old dogs day has come and gone, you cant be in wars like that at domestic level and expect to go into a world title fight fresh, now in saying that derry has prove me wrong before, but i dont see him lasting more than 6 rounds whit barroso

Neither fighter has done anything to "earn" a title shot (Mathews is rated the 7th best British lightweight by boxrec). But that's beside the point, per usual, when it comes to the alphabet leeches peddling their paper belts.

Only good things about it is it gives a domestic-level type like Mathews a chance to get a decent paychecks or two before he retires, and it will be a funner fight to watch than anything involving Abril
