Comments Thread For: Lemieux-N'Dam: GYM Will Not Prevent The Fight

Earlier this week, Golden Boy Promotions won the the purse bid for the bout between David Lemieux and Hassan N'Dam for the vacant IBF middleweight title.

But there is a lawsuit that hangs over Lemiuex's head from his former promoter. That promoter would be GYM, led by Yvon Michel.

Michel reminded BoxingScene.com - "We are in litigation, we are going against Lemieux, his manager - Camille Estehpane - Eye of the Tiger Management, Golden Boy and HBO."

However, this will not stop the Lemieux-N'Dam fight from taking place. Back in January, Lemieux signed a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions.

If Yvon Michel were truly sincere about not preventing the fight, they'd drop HBO from the suit. They essentially trying to exhort money because they have no case.

This is a flat out money shakedown. If you had a real claim to his contract you would be fighting to get him back fighting for you to fulfill that contract . Instead they are saying we just want money. Plus they are claiming they had some verbal agreement they don't even have anything in writing saying he owes them more fights. lol This is nothing but a frivolous lawsuit. We'll see if this prevents HBO from airing his fights

.... because they would rather be properly compensated for the deal, rather than holding up the career of a fighter that they don't seem to really harbor any ill will toward (his management being another story).

Rather than holding up the guy's career (ala Don King or the recent activities with Arum and Mikey Garcia), GYM is simply saying "let Lemieux take advantage of this opportunity, but pay us also".

No different then when, in the 50's and 60's, when the vanilla pop bands were found stealing full songs from blues/soul artists, rather than receiving any royalties, the offending party simply had to pay the full cost of putting out the original music.

GYM signed him as an eighteen year old, built him up, stuck with him when he fell, and built him up again, getting him to being on the verge of finally being a world champion and possibly the star that they saw him to possibly be when they originally signed him.

Whether it be the manager, Golden Boy, HBO or any new party with a stake in Lemieux, GYM simply wants someone to buy out the end of their deal with Lemieux, letting their former fighter sink/swim on his own talent.

If no one steps up, GYM goes to court, and Lemieux falls into that Mikey Garcia trap, languishing on the vine for however long it takes for someone to step up.

If you don't have a contract in writing, you don't have a contract. Anyone who runs their business on verbal contracts is an idiot and deserves to lose their shirt.
