Roach is primarily an offensive coach, Kovalev seems to have that side of his game working pretty well.

Not saying they wouldn't be a good fit, but offense is not exactly an area Kovalev needs help with.

I don't think Roach does much for him, nor does he seem likely to have the time. Kovalev would be #3 on his list at best behind Pacquiao and Cotto.

I hope to hell that Roach doesn't get Kovalev! I like Kovalev and I hope he gets a trainer that can work on his flaws and not help to create new ones. Kovalev is pretty adept at offense but his defense is lacking. Freddie cannot teach defense to save his life and his Parkinson's will not help him to do mitts and such with a guy like Kovalev. I hope Freddie gives up training when Manny retires... he can still run the gym and give advice though. I've noticed that Marvin is doing more and more and sometimes more than Freddie nowadays because Freddie's getting old and his disease is catching up to him more.

Kovalev needs a guy who can teach him to be defensive while being offensive. I don't like the defense 1st type of training for a guy like Kovalev by guys like Floyd Sr. or Virgil Hunter but they would be better than Roach imo. It's too bad there isn't Cus D'Amato, Angelo Dundee, or Emanuel Steward around today to train a guy like Sergey "the Krusher" Kovalev.
