Fear of brain damage/not being able to go back

    Hey all,

Before I post, I'm new to the forums so I'm sorry if this in the wrong place. I'm a 16 year old that has been training for about 3 years, which during that span, I have trained 5-6 days per wk, and 2 hours a session. I love boxing probably the most of any sport, and I have put every percent both physically and mentally into becoming the boxer I am today. However, there are two main concerns that I have with continuing on with boxing: 1, the fear of brain damage and 2, not being able to see what my possibilities are in other sports.

With my goal as a boxer, I have extremely high expectations for myself, I.e world title and I will only continue on with the sport seriously if I can achieve that. However, with that, I am frightened by the long term affects a boxing career such as that brings. To clarify, I am not afraid of pain or being hit, just the long term affects like brain damage. I am going very well with school, and I just can't seem to take that risk of ruining half of my life once my career has finished if I follow boxing.

Also, I am going very well with football at the moment, making representative teams and so on. With football, in order to be competing for success, you need to gain size, and if I follow training with football, then I could see myself gaining 30 - 40lbs in size, something that I know will hinder my boxing completely. I just fear not being able to come back to the sport I love (boxing) because I chose to put time in another sport. Another question I would like to ask is would it be possible to go from a sport like football, and go back down to boxing to the original way I previously was (I.e now)?

So, basically I am fearful of the consequences I would face and possibly regret if I did choose boxing. Also, I am worried that taking such a large time away from boxing (years) will make all of my hard work and dreams go to waste, as gaining size is a commitment in itself to lose again if I wanted to go back to boxing. Overall, I just face indecision on what to follow.

Very sorry If this post is too long and/or in the wrong forum. Any reply would greatly appreciated. If there is any need for more information I will gladly and quickly reply. Thank you!

the amateur experience comes with little repercussion if any. the pros can be a meat grinder. you choose what you want, how far you take it and what you are willing to sacrifice to get it.

Just being honest .. Stay away from pro boxing and stick with AM. if you have any worry it should be about the guy beating you not about long term damage.. Sounds like you don't have the lack of self regard you need to become a fan friendly fighter anywho .. Never had I thought brain damage or long term until my boys were born

i was just thinking about this yesterday, boxing and brain damage.. i was just thinking like it would be a complete trip for a fighter to feel completely fine today and then the next day when he wakes up its a whole new life for him where he doesnt remember shiiet. that would really fuck me up. which gives me more respect for these fighters that goes into the ring and put their life/health on the line.
