Ok, before this is misconstrued as a hater thread let me just say I think Hatton is an exciting boxer and look forward to seeing him fight the top guys out there. That is what is actually making me so frustrated, he is taking so long to step it up. Tzu was the undisputed jr. welterweight champ when Ricky beat him and everyone says Ricky beat the best at that division. I agree with this in thinking that he did beat the best in 140lbs at the time even though Tzu wasn’t at his prime (almost 36yrs old) he was still a hell of a 140 pounder.
Now what I think is wacky is that the proclaimed undisputed champ needs warm/tune up fights before taking on the other top guys in his division. I mean you just beat the best and you need tune up fights? After Pacman beat Barrera he didn’t need 4-5 fights to sharpen his skills to be ready for Morales. He fought a tough JMM then an easier build up fight then right to Morales. Pacman has fought the best in his division and fans love and respect him for it. Trinidad, fought tough almost consecutive fights with Whittaker, Vargas, ODLH, Reed, Joppy and Hopkins. These fights while also stepping up in weight from Welter to Middle weight. Diego Corrales fought Joel Casamayor (twice), Acelino Freitas and Castillo (twice) all consecutively while also stepping up in weight from super feather to lightweight. Mayweather gets criticized for not stepping up his competition even though he is coming up in weight 17lbs and took a warm up fight (Gotti) before stepping up his level of competition in Zab whom I still believe is extremely talented and an A fighter when he comes prepared.
I understand taking an easier fight between tough fights or an easy fight to become more acclimated to a new weight class but why the delay in competition for Hatton? Since June of 2005 when he fought Tzu he has only fought Carlos Maussa who lost 2 of his last 5 fights including a TKO to Cotto. I enjoy watching Hatton fight and would love to see him against Castillo, Cotto, Margarito or Mayweather but why is he (or his management) delaying in fighting the top fighters.
