  • Comments Thread For: Liam Smith Faces Romero For Vacant WBO Belt, 4/18

Liverpool hot-shot Liam Smith will face Argentina’s David Ezequiel Romero for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Light-Middleweight Championship on Saturday 18th April at the Echo Arena as he closes in a world title shot.

Unbeaten Smith features as chief support on a huge night of fight action on Merseyside with Derry Mathews challenging for the WBA World Lightweight title against champion Richar Abril, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

The 26-year-old, a former Commonwealth Champion and the current British Champion, is rated at number seven in the WBO world rankings - and also at number five in the IBF - knows a win could elevate him into the top three as he targets American WBO ruler Demetrius Andrade.

Smith is a decent fighter but no more than that imo. It was only in the 2nd half of the fight that he got on top to score his best win, over Erick Ochieng, a guy who continues to struggle at UK domestic level. Andrade?? Behave. Brian Rose was savagely exposed in that company but would be a big test for Smith and, as a Liverpool vs Blackpool red rose derby clash, would be an attraction too, and a good earner for both men.

I think ochieng has looked terrible lately. Smith would destroy him in 5 rounds now.
This fight makes no sense, why not bring someone credible over, maybe a delvin rodriguez level boxer.

Romero is ranked 202 in the boxrec light middle weights and he's 14th in argentina lol

all joe gallaghers fighters lack skills, what does he do teaching them all day? I dont see any skills or basic technique theyre all too upright and front on for a start and I doubt they know about distances. Joe gallagher will say he wants a world title shot after this and if you dont agree then your not giving his guy enough credit. He's full of ***** lol.

All the opponents joe gallagher picks are too safe, although Gamaliel Diaz fortunately got a cut cause he was going to outbox Crolla if he didnt.

Smith is a solid, decent fighter. He seems to be eager to make the leap to titles, but he needs move up in stages first. Or the jump from easy opposition to tough opposition may see him struggle. I wouldnt mind seeing him face the likes of Rose or Carson Jones.
