Well Bob Arum is certainly no bum, but he wasnt eager to be innovative and wasnt motivated to change the boxing business. Year after year boxing got a little bit less popular, ratings dropped, more and more politics got involved and always the same structure:
A limited amount of airdates on HBO and Showtime. Prospects got to fight at ESPN and SHOWBOX (?), more and more PPVs for weaker matchups.
He tried to establish a new outlet with china, but that wasnt enough to significantly raise the popularity.
While I still have doubts about Haymon, i still respect him for trying something new, to bring more awareness to boxing and to have many more platforms to showcase boxers.
It's still early and we have to wait if his fighters will be properly match and if his business plan will be successful, but now weve got besides HBO and Showtime, airdates on NBC, NBCsports, CBS, ESPN, SPIKETV and BounceTV.
With more outlets, boxers have the opportunity to fight more often, with being more present on television boxers will gain more popularity.
