Skill Trumps All.. Or Does It?

Does nationality or "culture"( ) play such an important factor in the sport that it could possibly lead fans to neglect a fighter's talent and skills? Or does talent and ability trump any other factor in the sport?

Now, personally I think nationality plays a minor role in a fighters career early on but skills will always trump that factor in the long run.

Sure, a fighter from Iceland may have an extremely limited fanbase or audience at first but if his skills and talents are good enough, he could very well break barriers and transcend languages and nationalities.

Boxing's biggest audience may very well come from Mexico, but that does not mean that Mexican fight fans will ignore any talent hailing from other countries such as the USA, UK, Kazak, Ukraine, Nicaragua, etc.. etc.. simply because said fighters don't hail from their home country.

When Floyd Mayweather Jr faced off against Saul Alvarez, 8 out of 10 households in Mexico tuned in for the showdown. I seriously doubt every last one of them was only tuning in to watch some redheaded ginger get schooled over 12 rounds.

Recently, I've seen silly posts over fighters being treated unfairly or not given just due because they are not from the "right culture". If such situation was indeed the case, neither Floyd Mayweather Jr nor Manny Pacquiao would be the number 1 and 2 PFP champions and most decorated fighters in the sport right now.

Fighters can be controversial, thugs, pimps, dishwashers, tax evaders, etc.. but that doesn't change the fact that once they step inside the squared circle, everything revolving around those men boils down to two fists and the skills they posses at beating down the man standing directly in front of them.

For those seconds, minutes or however long it may be that the fighters are inside the ring for, their race, color, nationality, past and future stand still and nothing else matters except for what they bring to the table that night. Their nationality won't make them punch harder, their "culture" won't make them move faster, their race won't give them the heart of a Lion, their fans won't take the pain for them... none of that matters at that point and that's the beauty of it.

So personally, I don't see how anything else can matter in such a brutal sport unless it's skills and talent. Trust me, I enjoy rooting for my fighters just as much as the next guy but to downtalk anyone else or play the victim role in such a diverse sport is ridiculous at this point. You have an African American fighter as the top draw in the sport, a Filipino fighter as the 2nd biggest draw in the sport and a Rican and Mexican following suit as number 3 and 4 respectively... to even suggest "culture" alone is the main culprit behind a fighter's success/hate at such an elite level in the sport is preposterous to say the least.

Now, what are your thoughts? Am I overlooking something or does skill, courage and talent indeed, trump all?

Most fans are casual. They don't understand the science part of it. They want to watch rock'em sock'em action. That is why MMA is popular because although Martial Arts are of course an Art, it is a full on fight rather just using hands.

If skills trumped all then people would know Lara doesn't run or Rigo is a master at his craft. People want "entertainment", they don't care how many counters you know for the jab. Now if you belong to their nationality then that is just a plus. So, it is a combo of excitement and nationality. GGG is exciting, hence why Mexicans have claimed him as theirs, but I bet he would be popular anywhere.

Come on there is a reason why Mayweather fights on Mexican holidays. Chavez Jr is exceptionally basic and average, but he is exciting and has the "right" fan base, so he got this far.

Summary: Exciting AND Nationality, but being exciting alone will get you far, nationality alone won't because well look at Lara and Rigo.

I accept that Rigo is a master of his craft but that Lara is a certified runner man. I wasn't bothered one bit when they robbed him against Canelo.

I missed the entertainment factor. I think a fighter needs the perfect blend of both Entertainment and skill to succeed in the sport beyond FNF and Sho Extreme boxing cards.

Mayweather's style may be boring to most casuals, but he makes up for his lack of entertainment value in the ring by being a character outside of it. Saul Canelo Alvarez may lack Elite level skills and talent, but he makes up for it by being courageous and taking on difficult challenges when they present themselves.

I suppose... if anything it takes at least two elements to make a fighter appealing to the fans on a bigger scale.

          boxing skills is very overated.

as part of popularity/money and in winning fights.

just because you're good doesn't mean it guarantees popularity/money.

and ppl overate technical skills overlooking physical skills like chin, stamina, durability and other intangibles like heart, will, courage.

Casuals dont find him boring. They only hate it when he runs like he did with Marcos and Ghost. That was AWFUL what he did. The Floyd who outslicked the hell out of JMM, Walked Down Canelo, is a special fighter.

People appreciate greatness. People dont care about Floyd outside of the ring. That has nothing to do with his skills, which people DO care about. People like Tiger because of how great and special he was. MJ, Kobe etc.

I never bought into the notion that people sat through Floyd's masterpieces because they was hoping he would lose. That makes no sense. When he is sharp, its so amazing what he does. I always felt that casuals were in AWE of boxing being executed at this level. Their so used to SRL, and Ali, running around the ring throwing jabs, get you hurt, then KO you.

Floyd dont get the KO, but he fights like a holligram. I find it VERY entertaining, and we all have the same eyes, and see the same thing.

But because he has haters, they lie after every fight and say it was boring. And credible nonbiased people have a habit of repeating things that haters say!

If skill trumped all we wouldn't need weight classes.

connection (nationality, sob story, underdog, etc) with a fanbase is only necessary for the initial hype-up. if the boxer truly have skills, he will keep winning and have longevity then everyone will hop that bandwagon.
nowadays many fan's levels are like ATG/legend and the rest hype jobs or journeyman. boxers stay hypejobs/journeyman unless they been fighting 15+ years, won multiple division titles and boxers don't have that type of career without having consistent great skills.
