Tell me, what exactly is your definition of an "ëxcuse".

Which of these examples is/are excuse/s:

Employee A telling his colleague. Hey, I will not come tomorrow for work, tell the boss I am sick.

Colleague: how did you know you will be sick tomorrow? you are just making an excuse not to come.

                  1. next day employee A was not able to work - he is truly sick

                  2. next day employee A was not able to work - met an accident on his way to the office

                  3. next day employee A was not able to work - drink hard the night before can't bring himself to wake up early, too much hung over and simply can not work.

                  4. next day employee A arrived at the office 5 minutes early and worked the whole day

Not defending that dude, but whether an excuse is true or false it is irrelevant. An excuse is a reason or justification, or defense put forward to lessen blame, or in your example for missing work. So either one of those you listed is an excuse whether true or not, hence the saying "you are excused".

So if pac lost and blamed the reasons for loosing on a well documented ailment of his, in this case, severe calf cramps; that by its very definition is an excuse.
