Does more need to be done for retired professional boxers?

A lot of boxers have ended up in terrible conditions such as Muhammad Ali, Gerald Mcclellan and many have ended up even dying. Brayford the most recent high profile death. Does more need to be done for retired boxers and also the families of boxers? And what can be done? A foundation/commission? A Legislation which makes boxers put a percentage of their purse away for their future?

It would like to see promoters/mangers/Networks/state athletic commissions pool resources so they can provide lifetime medical insurance to professional fighters.

I always felt a small percentage of their purse should be withheld and saved. Promoters should match that amount and fighters could not access the savings or the interest until after they retired. Too many ex-greats out there that end up broke and on the street.

Maybe something similar to what they are doing with retired NFL players. Yes i know thats a league but some sort of revenue should go to a similar retirement type plan for boxers.

No, what do you want them to do for them, at the end of the day its a job with no benefits. Millions of people have these type of jobs and have to get insurance from 3rd parties and same goes for their retirement, why should it be different for boxers?

They sign an independent contractor agreement, so the answer is no. It's up to them to be responsible with their money. That doesn't mean a promoter shouldn't help them out but there is no excuse for ignorance in boxing anymore. For todays boxers i agree they have to get smarter with money but for already retired boxers who didnt get the chance to make the millions its harder for them.

On PBC did you hear Hearn trying to talk? It was sad. Same time im not sure if he always talked like that but he looks slow and made me think about this very subject. Hes an ATG and it seems hes ok financially but not all are.

Alot of these fighters are damaged and find it hard to function in the world. All for the entertainment they gave us. Thats why i said something similar to what they are doing for NFL players.
